Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course pertains to digital infrastructures of Uralic languages (both the national languages Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian, as well as Uralic minority languages). Basic skills for competent digital handling of linguistic materials in these languages will be conveyed.
Topics discussed in the course include:
* How is linguistic data understood and processed by computers? How does this process differ based on the language (e.g. English, Hungarian, Udmurt, Nganasan)?
* What problems appear when handling digital data from less used languages? How are they to be understood? How can they be avoided?
* What resources are available for Uralic languages? What resources are under development?
* How can you search and process these resources in a non-trivial manner? How can you answer quantitative questions based on these resources?
