Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The German word Fremde withstands translation into English. If we use the words alien, stranger, other or foreigner, the subject matter is changed too. This lecture analyzes the specificities of the concept of Fremde with examples from literary texts from Central Europe, also drawing on other time-based works like those of music or film. During the 20th century, many things changed but not the fascination with strangeness and alienation. If we examine three periods of radical changes in the cultural history of Central Europe, the question arises: what are the similarities in this regard between the quest for modernity at the beginning of the century, the establishment of a new world order after the Second World War, and the turns and systemic changes around 1990?
