Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The last 130 years have been shaped by successive waves of new media. Theoreticians have examined the nature of these media, writers have reflected on and analyzed the new production possibilities and distribution channels.. In this course we will focus on four media: film, radio, television and the networked computer. How did writers respond first to the appearance of film and then to its overwhelming success? To what extent was the avant-garde a response to the cultural challenges presented by the new media? Can the montage techniques of dada, constructivism or surrealism, or multimedia performance, or the techniques of sound and visual poetry be considered a response? How did writers react to the lure of politics when collaborating in radio broadcasts before and after World War II, during the various fascist regimes, or during the Cold War? In what ways was the friction between literature and television reflected during the 1970s? Has the nature of poetry been modified by the possibility of computer text generation or by computer networks? The seminar seeks answers to these questions by examining selected works by writers and poets from Central Europe.
