Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Burgenland likes to pride itself on its linguistic and cultural diversity. The course will introduce the various ethnic groups and their languages: the local German dialect dialect ("Hianzisch/Heanzisch") as the most important contact language for Burgenland Hungarians, Burgenland Croats and Burgenland Roma, whose sociolinguistic starting points differ greatly. The question of which languages were spoken in the Jewish communities of Burgenland will also be addressed. Phenomena such as language contact, special developments in "language enclaves" and questions of language vitality will be discussed.
Assessment and permitted materials
Attendance and participation in the discussion. Presentation of a topic and writing of the same (‘seminar paper’) by the end of the semester. The usual principles of good scientific practice apply.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Presentation (30%), active participation (20%) and seminar paper (50%) on a self-chosen structural linguistic and/or sociolinguistic topic.
Examination topics
There is no examination. In principle, however, a presentation topic from the lecture ‘132015 Sprachkontakt und Sprachwandel: philologisch, typologisch, empirisch betrachtet’ can be chosen and a corresponding seminar paper can be written. This will then be assessed by Jeremy Bradley, who will also be present at the presentation.
Reading list
Will be provided during the semester in the form of bibliographies in the presentations of the course instructor on Moodle.
