Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Sociology of literature is a collective term for various theoretical approaches that assume that literature does not emerge without socially conditioned contexts. In the course, essential concepts of the sociology of literature are introduced, the corresponding specialist vocabulary is taught and areas of application of the sociology of literature are presented by way of example (literary business, canonisation, literary criticism, etc.).
After an introduction to the subject area, the methodological focus of the course is on close, partly independent reading and subsequent intensive discussion of methodologically and theoretically important texts on the sociology of literature. The participants of the courses should thus be enabled to formulate questions independently on the basis of knowledge of the most important foundational texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance & active participation, group work, timely submission of assignments, short presentations, submission of a written final paper at the end of the semester.

Attendance is compulsory in the course. Students who are absent from the first course unit without an excuse will be automatically deregistered from the course. In the course of the semester, it is possible for students to be absent twice without an excuse. Further absences must be cleared with the course lecturer, if necessary by providing a doctor's certificate.
Homework must be handed in on time despite absence or submitted by the agreed deadline after consultation with the course lecturer.
