Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The term "literary mediation" roughly includes all institutions, persons and processes that are involved in the intersection of literature and the public. This basically includes all aspects of the literary business, whereby the best-known forms of literary mediation are probably literary criticism and literary didactics - as practised in the various educational institutions from primary school to university. However, in this sense, publishers' editors, theatre producers, book designers or translators are also - more or less / directly or indirectly - active in the mediation of literature.
In academic discourse, a distinction is therefore made between technical or manufacturing professions, professions that translate or teach literature, and professions that mediate literature.
The focus of the course is on those agents who - as so-called "professional readers" - communicate publicly about literature with the aim of passing on awareness of and knowledge about literature. The aim of the proseminar is to get an overview of the various fields of mediating literature within this focus and their significance in different contexts and to analyse them on the basis of selected practical examples.

In the course, teaching methods such as blended learning, flipped classroom and plenary discussions are used, which requires that the students acquire certain contents independently (= through self-study and outside the lecture time).

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance and active participation in the course are compulsory.
For positive completion, a short presentation on a given topic (10 minutes) as well as a presentation on a chosen topic within the framework of the course (approx. 20 minutes) and a written paper of 15 pages are required. Please follow the rules of good scientific practice.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance, timely submission of the final paper, presentation of the topic paper.
The topic paper should present the preliminary work done for the final paper (topic identification, formulation of the research question, literature research, planned structure of the paper, perhaps first results).
The final paper must be written according to the rules of good scientific practice and must not fall below the required minimum length (15 pages incl. bibliography). The final paper should demonstrate independent work with the scientific literature (research, reading, analysis and summary and application to the research question posed).

Examination topics

To be announced in the first session.

Reading list

The list of literature as well as selected texts will be made available for download on Moodle.
