Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course is dedicated to the reading of selected, fundamental texts of memory research in sociology, on the basis of which some theoretical approaches to the topic of "memory and remembrance" are developed and important basic concepts of the same are discussed ("collective memory" vs. "communicative memory", "lieux de mémoire", etc.).
We will then look at the role literature plays within memory and remembrance research, especially as literary works, alongside non-fictional texts or rituals, monuments, etc., represent a central medium for the construction of memory and the creation of identity, and how literature functions in this context.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance & active participation, group work, timely submission of assignments, short presentations, submission of a written final paper at the end of the semester.

Attendance is compulsory in the course. Students who are absent from the first course unit without an excuse will be automatically deregistered from the course. In the course of the semester, it is possible for students to be absent twice without an excuse. Further absences must be cleared with the course lecturer, if necessary by providing a doctor's certificate.
Homework must be handed in on time despite absence or submitted by the agreed deadline after consultation with the course lecturer.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The overall grade is made up of the three sub-grades for
1) Active participation in the course
2) assignments during the semester: presentations / reading logs
3) final paper (= Course portfolio)

All three sub-grades must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall grade. The weighting of the partial grades is equal.
