Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This exercise course pertains to digital infrastructures for Uralic/Finno-Ugric languages. We will be looking at and studying digital infrastructures of Uralic languages (both the national languages Hungarian, Finnish, and Estonian, as well as Uralic minority languages). Basic skills for competent digital handling of linguistic materials in these languages will be conveyed.
Topics discussed in the course include:
* How is linguistic data understood and processed by computers? How does this process differ based on the language (e.g. English, Hungarian, Udmurt, Nganasan)?
* What problems appear when handling digital data from less used languages? How are they to be understood? How can they be avoided?
* What resources are available for Uralic languages? What resources are under development?
* How can you search and process these resources in a non-trivial manner? How can you answer quantitative questions based on these resources?

Assessment and permitted materials

Students should compile a learning diary over the course of the semester in which they illustrate their comprehension of the subject matters covered in the course. For each topic they should illustrate how they used the presented infrastructures, or comparable ones (esp. for other languages), in the analysis of tasks of their own. At the end of the course the teacher will discuss the contents with the students individually.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement: 50% of the maximum number of points in evaluation of learning diary.

90-100% = 1 (best grade)
75%+ = 2
60%+ = 3
50%+ = 4
< 50% = 5 (failing grade)
