Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The lecture begins with a theoretical introduction to the subject: In the first units, the term 'children's literature' is defined in more detail and an introduction is given to the fundamental aspects of the subject of children's literature, such as specialist terminology, various genres of children's literature, material and motifs (picture books, realistic children's literature, fantastic children's literature, classics of children's literature, children's poetry) as well as the history of children's literature in Hungary. Attention will not only be paid to children's literature in the narrower sense, i.e. children's literature published in print as (picture) books, but also to their media adaptations in the form of radio plays and animated films or series. In the second half of the semester, selected children's literature texts/works will be analysed in a general literary context, focusing on questions such as: What ideas of childhood are expressed in contemporary Hungarian children's literature (20th or 21st century)? Has the representation of childhood changed in the course of the last century? What motifs can be found in the different eras of contemporary Hungarian children's literature? What are the specific characteristics of radio plays/cartoons or series/(picture) books? What differences do different media adaptations of one and the same material bring? What role do multilingual children's books play in language acquisition?
