Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Loved, despised, (secretly?) enjoyed as exciting evening or beach reading, dismissed as schematic trivial literature or respected as ‘serious’ literature? The crime novel triggers all kinds of emotions in its readers - the spectrum is wide. The lecture aims to provide an insight into the quite diverse contemporary Hungarian crime fiction, to trace its development in the 20th century, to look at its various forms - including regional crime fiction, detective stories and thrillers - and to examine them in a European context. This also includes looking at film adaptations and crime films for the big screen or home screens.
As far as possible, primary literature will be used that is also available in German. However, students who are able to do so are also encouraged to read Hungarian-language crime literature. However, this is not a prerequisite for successful completion of the course.

The course uses teaching methods such as guest lectures - partly in Hungarian with German translation, blended learning, flipped classroom and plenary discussions, which requires students to acquire certain content independently (= in self-study and outside the lecture time of the course).

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam in German or Hungarian at the end of the semester (exam duration 90 minutes), in which three open essay questions are asked. No aids are permitted in the examination. The overall grade of the exam is calculated from the partial grades of the individual questions.

1st date: 24 June 2025, 13:15 to 14:45, HS 1
2nd date: end of September - tba
3rd date: November 2025 - tba
4th and thus last date: February 2026 - tba

In the course of the semester, a two-part assignment can be completed on a voluntary basis, with which a total of 2 bonus points can be gained.
2 bonus points = 1 positively assessed examination question in the written examination (i.e. instead of 3 questions, only 2 need to be answered)
Example: Result of the work assignment is e.g. ‘Good’ -> 1 examination question in the final written examination is automatically assessed as ‘Good’ and no longer needs to be answered in the examination

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

For positive completion of the course, more than 50% of the possible points must be achieved in the final written examination.
Very good: 100 - 88 %
Good: 87 - 75 %
Satisfactory: 74 - 63 %
Sufficient: 62 - 51 %
Insufficient: 50 - 0 %
(Decimal places are rounded.)

Examination topics

Course content (lecture, PowerPoint presentations & primary and secondary literature).
There is NO script for the lecture; the students are required to take their own notes and to work independently on the compulsory or recommended secondary literature.
