Aims, contents and method of the course

This course deals with specific problems in the historical phonology of the Uralic languages spoken in the Volga area: the Permic languages (Komi and Udmurt), Mari and Mordwin.

The course will include, among others, discussion of the following topics: Problems with the phonological reconstruction of Proto-Permic; irregular developments of Proto-Uralic phonemes in the languages in Mari, Mordvin and Permic; history of Mari vocalism (especially the reduced vowels); areal innovations in the historical phonology of the languages of the Volga area.

Assessment and permitted materials

Written exam (if desired or necessary online) over the subject matters covered in the semester.

No special tools are allowed during the exam.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students are expected to grasp the content of the research presented in the course.
Minimum requirement: 50% of the maximum number of points at the exam.
Assessment criteria:
90-100% = Very good
75% = Good
60% = Satisfactory
50% = Sufficient
