Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Knowledge transfer in the humanities mainly involves the means of published linguistic texts. Dealing competently with texts of one's own subfield is therefore one of the most important skills of any linguist or Uralicist. In this course we will train these skills. To achieve this goal, we read current uralistic and linguistic literature in a group and reflect upon the texts. Points of discussion include scientific quality criteria, the structure of texts, types of argumentation, research methods, and the comparison of different linguistic theoretical frameworks (e.g. functionalism vs. formalism). The course aims to enable the students to competently deal with linguistic literature and to work with them independently.

The language of instruction is German. Reading knowledge of English is required. The knowledge of other languages is an advantage, but no requirement to take part in the course.
