Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Every language has a linguistic means to reverse the truth value of a proposition – negation. Due to its universality in human language, this phenomenon has been the subject of much linguistic investigation, and connects various subdisciplines including syntax, semantics, and pragmatics.

In this course we investigate different aspects of negation from a cross-linguistic, typological perspective. Special attention is paid to the morphosyntax of negation, and negation in the Uralic languages. The topics discussed in this course include the morphology of sentential negation (i.e. affirmative and negative verbal paradigms, types of the exponents of negation, e.g. particles, affixes or auxiliaries), types of non-finite negation, negative concord (= “double negation”), negation of indefinite pronouns and negative polarity, expletive negation.

The course is conceived as introduction into the linguistic investigation of negation. We discuss and critically review the most important concepts and research questions related to negation, and get acquainted with current typological research of negation, focussing on the Uralic languages.

The language of instruction is German. Knowledge of English is beneficial for reading the suggested supplementary literature.
