Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Combining texts and images has been common in all cultures since their beginnings: from the pre-Christian forms of figurative text in Egypt or China or inscriptions on Greek vases, through the most diverse types of text-in-picture compositions in the course of the Renaissance, the early modern period, the Baroque, Futurism, Dadaism and Surrealism, to our present day, in which comic strips, cartoons, illustrated magazines and coffee table books have become just as commonplace as "concrete poetry" or various digital experiments to find new forms of artistic expression and stimulate unusual modes of production and perception.

In the first half of the seminar, the historical lines of development of the combination of text and image in European literature will be considered - among other things in the form of impulse presentations by the participants - and selected, introductory theoretical texts on the topic will be read and discussed together.
In the second half of the seminar, specific examples from the literature will be jointly selected, discussed and finally further analysed by the participants independently. The results of this work process will be presented towards the end of the semester in the form of longer thematic presentations and elaborated in writing in the respective seminar papers.

In the course, teaching methods such as blended learning, flipped classroom and plenary discussions are used, which requires that the students acquire certain contents independently (= through self-study and outside the lecture time).

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance and active participation in the course are compulsory.
For positive completion, a short presentation on a given topic (10 minutes) as well as a presentation on a chosen topic within the framework of the course (approx. 20 minutes) and a written paper of 25 pages are required. Please follow the rules of good scientific practice.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Attendance, timely submission of the final paper, presentation of the topic paper.
The topic paper should present the preliminary work done for the final paper (topic identification, formulation of the research question, literature research, planned structure of the paper, perhaps first results).
The final paper must be written according to the rules of good scientific practice and must not fall below the required minimum length (25 pages incl. bibliography). The final paper should demonstrate independent work with the scientific literature (research, reading, analysis and summary and application to the research question posed).

Examination topics

To be announced in the first session.

Reading list

The list of literature as well as selected texts will be made available for download on Moodle.
