Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course, the youngest province of Austria is approached in an interdisciplinary way - from the perspective of linguistics as well as cultural studies. Thus, the different languages of Burgenland (German/Hianzic, Hungarian, Burgenland-Croatian, Romanes, Yiddish) are just as much the subject of consideration as its different cultures and how these also appear in public discourse - such as in the media or politics - or in literature.
The topic is dealt with through the individual reading of texts, their discussion in the plenum as well as the joint analysis and discussion of sources and the attendance of guest lectures, which mostly take place at the time of the course but also outside the course time if necessary.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students should hand in a course diary at the end of the semester, which, in addition to summarising the central contents of the various units, should also contain their own reflections in order to demonstrate independent engagement with the contents and issues discussed in the course. The course diary should cover the 10 thematic units of the course and have a minimum length of 15 pages (A4, Arial, font size 12, 1.5 line spacing).
In addition, all participants should give a presentation (approx. 15 minutes) on a self-selected topic of the course and prepare visual aids (PowerPoint presentation / handout), which have to be handed in beforehand.

Participation is mandatory; active participation will be evaluated.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The overall grade is made up of three sub-grades:
1) Participation in the course or in group work
2) Presentation
3) Course diary
All three sub-grades must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall grade. The weighting of the partial grades is equal.
