Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

After completing the course, the student is able to:

• Describe some of the main poetic currents and undercurrents in Finnish contemporary prose literature and the traditions or larger phenomena behind these poetics
• Describe the diversity of the Finnish 2000s prose literature
• Understand the materialist-discursive take on literature
• Understand the basics of narratology and narrative analysis and it’s critique
• Analyse the poetics of prose literature

Content:

This course reconsiders how contemporary Finnish prose employs, reflects, explores and modifies poetics and narratives. Course explores both well-known, often award-winning, high/middle-brow mainstream novels from 2000s and some more marginal or experimental texts. The focus is on their form, content, structure and genealogy. The aim is at understanding how prose literature constructs itself and it’s poetics by repeating and modifying genres, traditions, tropes, medialities, cultural phenomena and various forms of texts and other materials.

Modes of Study:
Lectures, text analyses, group work and private study
