Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The course will provide insight into the following topics: Research (material search, sources, methods), preparation of a scientific paper (choice of topic, type of text, structure, planning), formal requirements (bibliographies, references, citations), scientific writing.
The students will acquire skills that enable them to write a scientific paper according to the generally accepted rules of scientific practice.

In the course, emphasis is placed on an interactive working method. The students are encouraged to actively participate - partly in the form of group work, research tasks, presentations, discussions and exercises. For this purpose, students may be asked to bring laptops or tablets with them to classroom sessions, if possible.

Assessment and permitted materials

Attendance & active participation, group work, timely submission of assignments, short presentations, submission of a written course portfolio (= organized and formatted collection of assignments with introduction and conclusion) at the end of the semester.

Attendance is compulsory in the course. Students who are absent from the first course unit without an excuse will be automatically deregistered from the course. In the course of the semester, it is possible for students to be absent twice without an excuse. Further absences must be cleared with the course lecturer, if necessary by providing a doctor's certificate.
Homework must be handed in on time despite absence or submitted by the agreed deadline after consultation with the course lecturer.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The overall grade is made up of the three sub-grades for
1) Participation in the course or participation in group work
2) homework
3) final paper

All three sub-grades must be positive in order to achieve a positive overall grade. The weighting of the partial grades is equal.
