Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course presents a first insight in culture and history of the Low Countries and its inhabitants. It addresses current social discourses in the Netherlands, Flandern, and Belgium, and questions how inhabitants view themselves and their past. Various distinct themes will be considered, such as Monarchy, political stage and federal state (Belgium), cultural diversity, pillarization and tolerance (The Netherlands), both 20th C. World Wars, colonial history in Asia, Africa and the Caribbean, and the Golden Age.

Assessment and permitted materials

The course is concluded with a written exam. First exam date: 13 June 2022, second exam date: 27 June 2022

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The exam consists of 7 essay questions (to be answered in English, German, or Dutch). Maximum score per question is 6 points, resulting in a maximum total score of 42 points. To pass, a minimum score of 24 points (60%) is required.

Examination topics

In each of the 10 lectures, specific themes will be introduced and discussed. Lectures are accompanied by background reading and illustrated by excerpts from literature (in translation). These texts are presented in Moodle, together with study questions to prepare in home study. Presentation slides from the lectures will be published on Moodle as well.
