Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The aim of the course is to provide information about the phenomenon of the avant-gardism in both the Ukraine and Russia (i.e. from 1920 in the Soviet Union). It is intended to provide an insight into the national concerns of the two avant-garde-movements and their peculiar forms, which were caused by specific historical and political contexts and to achieve competences in this area among the students. The differences and counter-effects, as well as the mutual influences of the Ukrainian and the Russian avant-garde art, are analyzed. Much attention is being paid to the contacts with avant-garde movements and groups in Western Europe. The historical function of the Ukraine as a link between the West and East will be explained. In the course of the seminar, the deficits of the corresponding definitions for the peculiar cultural phenomena that arose in a political space, that of the Tsar monarchy, later the Soviet Union, are to be covered in the course of the seminar. The focus is on comparative approaches; such disciplines as comparative literature, cultural studies and history. The interaction between avant-garde poetry, painting, stage art and film from the period 1910-1937, is discussed. Linguistic and semiotic questions of the avant-garde culture (Roman Jakobson and Yuri Lotman) and the application of some philosophical approaches (Derrida's deconstruction) will also be reflected. The selected texts are analyzed in German translations from Russian and Ukrainian language.
