Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Aesthetic self-reference or meta-reference is a phenomenon that occurs in practically all the arts. From theatre, for example, we know the "play within the play", from narrativism the technique of opening up another narrative within a narrative on another level, etc. But it is not only about framings or leaps into the invented reality, but also about procedures in general that serve to signal that "this is art that obeys certain rules" and that the person who has produced this or is currently performing it also knows this. So you could say that meta-reference serves as an ironic safeguard. But one could also state, historically so to speak, that practically every art form in itself and every aesthetic tradition (e.g. all forms of series) tend to become increasingly self-referential. Since we are in literary studies, we will focus on self-reference in narrative literature (metafiction), drama (metatheatre) and film. But painting, music, opera, comics and poetry have also developed diverse forms of meta-reference, which we will examine at least in examples. In this respect, there is a wide choice for homework topics.
Assessment and permitted materials
The exact coordination of session topics takes place after an initial overview of registrations. I have recently had good experiences with short (!) impulse contributions that comprised exactly 10 ppt slides in exactly 10 minutes. This could also be a model for this seminar.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Attendance according to study law, participation, writing exercises if necessary, presentation. A written final paper of 20 to a maximum of 25 pages.
Examination topics
Grading is based on participation, writing exercises and namely the presentation on the resulting work.
Reading list
The secondary literature on aesthetic meta-reference is not extensive as far as the basics are concerned, but differentiated as soon as one looks at the individual phenomena. I will bring and present the most important literature to you; ideally, some contributions will also become the subject of your presentations.
