Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Stories about invented artists, musicians and, of course, authors are an extremely popular constant in world literature. Naturally, because in the latter case a kind of self-thematisation in the sense of aesthetic meta-reference takes place. There are thousands of literary texts in which fictional characters create fictional works, mostly, but not only, in narrative. W.H. Wackenroder, "Josef Berglinger", E.T.A. Hoffmann, "Die Jesuiterkirche in G.", H. de Balzac, "Le chef d'oeuvre inconnu", H. Murger, "Scènes de la vie de Bohème", M. Aub, "Jusep Torres Campalans", Th. Mann, "Doktor Faustus", V. Nabokov, "The Real Life of Sebastian Knight", M. Proust, "A la recherche du temps perdu", H. James, "The Aspern Papers", A. Byatt, "Possession", W. Busch, "Maler Klecksel" and "Balduin Bählamm", G. Keller, "Der grüne Heinrich", J.L. Borges, "Untersuchung des Werks von Herbert Quain" and many, many others. You will therefore have ample opportunity to bring your own reading preferences into play. The aim of the seminar is to systematise the procedures, intentions and functions of fictional characters with aesthetic productivity and, of course, to classify the main texts in the respective work contexts and epochs.
Assessment and permitted materials
The exact coordination of session topics takes place after an initial overview of registrations. I have recently had good experiences with short (!) impulse contributions that comprised exactly 10 ppt slides in exactly 10 minutes. This could also be a model for this seminar.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Attendance in accordance with study regulations, participation, writing exercises if necessary, presentation, written term paper.
Examination topics
