Aims, contents and method of the course

James Joyce's last novel, Finnegans Wake (1939) has a special place in literary history: it is almost proverbially "unreadable" (because of its language), apart from being "untranslatable" as well. Yet, Finnegans Wake is being read, translated, and annotated, and is the subject or inspiration for literature, film, and music.
The seminar is concerned not so much with the text of the novel as with its paratexts and contexts. A work sui generis of modernism, a "novel", a "book of the dark" (John Bishop). Contextualizing and discussions of Joyce since the 1920s will be the focus of our inquiry.
In particular, the seminar will take a look at the semantics and metaphorical dimension of the language used to contextualize the book in various fields, constituting a kind of "biography" of Finnegans Wake.

Assessment and permitted materials

Aufgrund der Einschränkungen durch die Coronakrise wird ein Teil der LV digital und mittels selbständiger Recherche und Gruppenarbeiten durchgeführt. Diskussionseinheiten werden hingegen in Präsenz abgehalten.

Teilnehmer*innen sollen die Diskussionen protokollieren.
Die Details dazu werden in einer virtuellen Sitzung zu Semesterbeginn vereinbart.

Wesentlicher Teil der zu leistenden Arbeit ist die Auswertung von Forschungsliteratur zu Joyce. Die Forschungsergebnisse der Teilnehmer*innen sollen dabei nicht in Form von Seminararbeiten präsentiert werden, sondern Material zu einer gemeinsam zu formulierenden Forschungsfrage beitragen.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Beurteilungsgrundlage sind Anwesenheit (virtuell und in Präsenz), Mitarbeit und rechtzeitige Abgabe einzelner Teilleistungen (Protokolle, Zwischenergebnisse) während des Semesters.
