Aims, contents and method of the course

The lecture is a theoretical and practical introduction to modeling humanities data with XML, with a special focus on the Text Encoding for Interchange (TEI) standard. TEI has become a de facto standard for semantic markup and encoding of humanities data over the last two decades and is used, for instance, in the development of digital editions, digital collections, and linguistic text corpora.
In the course, a mixture of lecture, discussion, and practical exercises will introduce students to working with XML and schema languages, basics of modeling and text markup with TEI, and working with the TEI Guidelines. A sample digital edition will be implemented: from XML/TEI encoding to basic web representation using X technologies (XPath, XSL transformation, etc.). Specific requirements for digital editions will be discussed and reflected.

Assessment and permitted materials

Folgende Leistungen müssen gemäß den Vorgaben des LV-Leiters erbracht werden: Mitarbeit während der Lehrveranstaltung, die Kursinhalte müssen durch praktische Übungen erarbeitet und vertieft werden, aktive Teilnahme an Diskussionen, zwischen den LV-Blöcken müssen Übungen bearbeitet und ausgewählte Literatur gelesen und vorbereitet werden.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Jede Teilleistung wird eigenständig bewertet. Vier praktische Übungsaufgaben sind einzureichen was 80% der Beurteilung ausmacht und Mindestvoraussetzung für eine positive Note ist. Alle Teilleistungen müssen positiv sein.
Die Mitarbeit, aktive Teilnahme an Übungen und Diskussionen fließen zu 20% in die Note ein.
Anwesenheitsregelung: Um eine positive Note zu erhalten, ist maximal die Abwesenheit bei einem LV-Block erlaubt.
