Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The digitisation of cultural heritage and historical data has created previously unimagined possibilities for humanities researchers. We now have instant, online access to databases harvested from museum collections, archives and libraries, and researchers can access and use data and materials stored in any location, at any time, from anywhere in the world.This seminar will explore how these digital artifacts can be curated and presented on the web. In the beginning of the seminar, we will explore different web experiences in the arts and humanities. After a Design Thinking phase, we will explore different tools from simple page builder to javascript frameworks to present data and to create interactive web experiences.The central goal of the seminar ist to create an own web experience that will be hosted online. The seminar will use an iterative process, in which we will gather user feedback to improve on our project. This way student will be familiarized with process that are also used in the design of actual software projects.Part of the seminar will be an introduction to web technologies, and students can select based on their previous experiences and knowledege a technology stack that they would like to use.
Assessment and permitted materials
As this is a research seminar, with a practial component, a high level of interest and the ability to undertake self-motivated research will be important to succesfuly complete the course.
Assessment will consist of a digital project, a seminar paper that reflects the project from a scholarly perspective and relates it to relevant projects in art, humanities or journalism, in-class presentations on a web experience and an academic article related to the course topic and, of course, in-class participation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
No prior knowledge of working with web technologies is assumed. Students can select a technology based on their previous knowledge or interest. For being able to participate in the seminar, a laptop is needed.The course is evaluated according to a points system. You can achieve 100 points in the course. The research project is rated with up to 50 points, the seminar paper reflecting the project 20 points, in-class presentations 15 and general participation 15 points. Conversion of points to grades: 0-50 = insufficient, 51-60 = sufficient, 61-70 = satisfactory, 71-80 = good, 81-100 = very good
