Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
In the first part of this course we will cover the more advanced grammar of Ge'ez. The second part will be devoted to reading selections of Ge'ez literature, including hagiographic texts, royal chronicles, and inscriptions.
Assessment and permitted materials
At the end of the semester (Tuesday, 30 January 2018), there will be an in-class exam, which will consist of a short selection from a Ge'ez text to be translated into English or German. A supplementary word-list will be provided and students are allowed full access to all power-points and class notes, as well as any grammars. No use of the internet is allowed, however.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Grading will be based solely on the final exam. Class participation is, however, strongly recommended as this will better prepare students for the exam. The grading system is as follows:5) 0-52: not enough
4) 53-65: enough
3) 66-77: satisfactory
2) 78-90: good
1) 91-100: very goodStudents who score a 5 are required to retake the exam.

Reading list
Our textbook for this course is Stephan Prochazka's "Altäthiopische Studiengrammatik". Once we finish this, PDFs of Ge'ez texts will be posted on Moodle. These are required readings. Periodically, the professor will post supplementary (though not required) readings treating various aspects of Ge'ez philology and/or articles on Ethiopian history and culture relevant to Ge'ez.
