Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Mining hast imprinted itself forcefully in the history of various African societies. Copper mining companies, the glitter of gold and precious gemstones have been intimately connected to the ways people in South Africa, Zambia, Ghana or Angola, for instance, live and work. In this seminar we will look at various historical trajectories mining took in different African countries and societies. We will focus on themes in social, economic and cultural history.

The seminar will take place in English unless only German-speaking students attend the class.
