Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The goal of this course is to aquaint students with the history of pre-Islamic South Arabia. The focus will be on political history, though various aspects of the social, cultural, and economic history of the region will also be covered. At the beginning of the semester, one class will be devoted to the study of ancient South Arabia and another class to the region's prehistory. Then, towards the end of the semester, a class will be devoted to South Arabia during the early Islamic period (ca. 630-900 CE).

Assessment and permitted materials

The final two classes will be devoted to in-class presentations by students. These are to be devoted to some topic of ancient South Arabian history during one or more of the periods covered in class. Each presentation should last approximately 15 minutes. In addition, each student is responsible for writing a ten-page paper. It is not necessary that this paper cover the topic dealt with in the in-class presentation.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Grading will be based on in-class participation and on the presentation and paper. The end-of-the-semester presentation and essay will account for 50% of the grade for the course.

The grading system is as follows:
5 (0-52): not enough
4 (53-65): enough
3 (66-77): satisfactory
2 (78-90): good
1 (91-100): very good

Examination topics

See "Art der Leistungskontrolle und erlaubte Hilfsmittel (Englisch)".

Reading list

Each week, one or two articles will be posted on Moodle. Each student will be responsible for readings these articles and should be prepared to comment on them in class.
