Ziel des Seminars ist es zunächst, die südasienspezifischen historiographischen Grundlagen einiger früher Schlüsseltexte zu erarbeiten und im Ausgang vom Verständnis der Fallstudien die theoretische Debatte kritisch zu betrachten.
Vorausgesetzt werden grundlegende Kenntnisse der Geschichte Indiens im 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts, bzw. die Bereitschaft, sich diese zusätzlich anzueignen. Die Beurteilung erfolgt auf der Basis von regelmäßiger Teilnahme, aktiver Mitarbeit, einem Referat mit Thesenpapier und einer Hausarbeit.
