Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Thorough understanding of the development of Islam and of phenomena regarded as Islamic or Muslim,viewed in historical and contemporary transnational perspective. This time the focus lies on modern religious, social, cultural and political manifestations of Islam at the eastern and western fringes of its distribution: i.e. in Southeast Asia and the Americas.
Capability to work with relevant primary and secondary sources in German and English mandatory. Capability to work with Arabic primary sources desirable.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in discussions of assigned readings, oral presentation

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Minimum requirement for successful completion of the course is active participation and physical presence (2 absences will be tolerated), as well as the positively evaluated delivery of an oral presentation. Grading will be based on the achievements in participation and oral presentation at a 50:50 ratio.
