Die Vorlesung befasst sich mit den historischen Ereignissen und sozialen Kontexten dieser Bewegung und legt besonderes Augenmerk auf die ideengeschichtlichen Hintergründe. Dazu gehören die frühen Formen patriotischer Gesinnung und religiöser Neubestimmung transregionaler Identität (Hindi-Nationalismus, Neohinduismus etc.) wie auch neue Modelle sozialer Gerechtigkeit verschiedener Provenienz. Vor allem wird die Rolle einiger wichtiger Persönlichkeiten zu betrachten sein: Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, Motilal und Jawaharlal Nehru, B.R. Ambedkar, M.A. Jinnah u.a. waren ungewöhnliche Charaktere, die auf je eigene Weise westliche und südasiatische Ideen neu verknüpften. Ihre Ideale (wie Gewaltlosigkeit, Sozialismus, Marxismus, verfassungsmäßiger Minderheitenschutz, Antisäkularismus etc.) gerieten immer wieder in Konflikt und prägten den politischen Prozess, dessen Konsequenzen bis heute wirksam sind.Themen:• Einführung• Proto-Nationalismus• Neohinduismus und religiöser Nationalismus• "Crown Rule"• Die Partei des "Indian National Congress"• Gandhi und die nationale Mobilisierung• Nicht-Zusammenarbeit und ziviler Ungehorsam• Ambedkar und die Dalit• Jinnah und die Frage des Muslim-Staates• Der Zweite Weltkrieg• Die Teilung Indiens• Verfassungsfragen
