This proseminar aims at transmitting a choice of thematic and methodical foci of social science and historical approaches in African Studies as well as on accompanying students in developing a research question and its elaboration in form of a seminar paper.
On the basis of specialised literature, we will discuss the topics of ‚social and political movements’, ‚migration and mobility’ and ‚popular culture’ on the African continent and in diasporic contexts. The three thematic domains shall function as a suggestion for further elaborations in form of seminar papers. It is also possible to write the paper on another topic.
Further, texts on methodological questions will be discussed, which are of crucial relevance to African Studies. In this respect, a special focus lies on questions of positionalities of researchers, a critical reflection on speakers’ positions, the use of language as much as modes of presentation of research.
The proseminar is structured in the following manner: In the first part of the semester we read and discuss specialised literature on thematic and methodical foci of social science and historical perspectives in African Studies. In the second part of the semester, students present the concept of their planned seminar papers followed by peer-group discussions.
