Aims, contents and method of the course

Es gibt in Südasien eine Vielzahl sozialer Bewegungen, d.h. "Formen kollektiver Selbst-Organisation zur Erreichung sozialer Anerkennung und Durchsetzung von Rechten oder existentiellen Interessen…" (Fuchs & Linkenbach 2003: 1525). Die Übung konzentriert sich dabei auf solche Bewegungen in Indien und Nepal, in denen ethnische Identitäten im Mittelpunkt des Kampfes stehen. Dabei können diese ethnischen Identitäten und ethnischen Ansprüche in Südasien sehr unterschiedliche Formen annehmen. Es kann sich dabei um die Forderungen von indigenen Gruppen (adivasi, janajati) oder sogenannten Scheduled Tribes handeln, ebenso um die Forderungen von Kastengruppen (wie der Dalit) oder von ethno-religiösen Gruppierungen (z.B. Akali Dal, Sangh Parivar). Zur Analyse und Interpretation dieser Bewegungen, ihrer Zielsetzungen und Mobilisierungsstrategien werden verschiedene methodische Ansätze zu betrachten sein. Dazu gehören insbesondere historische Studien der kolonialen Quellen, sozialanthropologische Beschreibungen von sozialen Organisationen, Interessengruppen, Aktivismus und der Herausbildung von Zivilgesellschaft, sowie auch diskursanalytische Untersuchungen von Manifesten, Historiographien, Selbstdarstellungen, Biographien etc. Die eingehende Beschäftigung mit einzelnen exemplarischen Fällen von ethnischen Bewegungen gibt dabei auch Gelegenheit zur kritischen Reflektion der einschlägigen theoretischen Konzepte der Bewegungsforschung.

Die soziale Dynamik dieser Bewegungen, deren Wurzeln meist in die koloniale Zeit zurückreichen, hat einen nachhaltigen Einfluss auf die gegenwärtige Prozesse der Macht- und Identitätspolitik. Ein Verständnis dieser Dynamik ermöglicht also ein besseres und tieferes Verständnis der aktuellen politischen Auseinandersetzungen und Konflikte in Südasien.
