Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course covers some of the key topics in Development Economics (e.g. markets and market failure, growth models, trade liberalization, financial liberalization, currency crises). The course will be taught at an introductory level.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students will be evaluated on the basis of their presentations during the course, written homeworks to be handed in regularly, and participation in class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Students will develop analytical skills to think independently about the problems of developing countries as well as the effects of economic policies.

Examination topics

Student presentations, lectures, group discussions.

Reading list

Readings will range from purely theoretical to historical, empirical, and policy documents. Authors covered amongst others are W. Easterly, E. Ostrom, P. Krugman, D. Rodrik, G.Hardin, S. L. Engerman und K. L. Sokoloff.
