Aims, content and methods

In this proseminar we critically engage with the field of ‚African Diaspora’ in politics and culture, both a theoretical as well as empirical level. The history and presence of Europe has been entwined with it’s colonial expansion towards the African continent as well as with (post-) colonial migration between (former) colinised countries and European ‚metropoles’. Against this background, processes of constituting ‚African Diasporas’ take place. Processes of diasporisation address, amongst others, questions of multiple identities as well as transnational practices and forms of belonging. Culture and politics are important domains of negotiations in this regard. Following Gilroy (1993), European societies are hence always also diasporised societies.

In the course of the proseminar, we approach the concept of ‚African Diaspora’ as situated between external ascriptions and self-descriptions. In the first part, we engage with the concept on a theoretical level. On the basis of required reading from the fields of Diaspora Studies as well as Cultural Studies, the terms ‚diaspora’ and especially the one of ‚African diaspora’ as well as histories and presence of ‚African diasporas’ in Europe are discussed. In this regard, historical accounts - such as panafricanism - as well as current debates - e.g. notions of ‚Afropean identities’ - are addressed.
In the second part of the course, the focus is put on case studies. Students are required to choose a case study themselves and present it during class. The case studies are also the basis for the final written assignment in form of a seminar paper. During the course, students shall practice to choose a topic, formulate a research question and discuss it in form of a written assignment.
