Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The concept of bodhicitta (Tib.: byang chub sems) in its sense of the resolve to become a buddha is fundamental to Mahayana thought and practice. The Mahayanist bodhisattva is defined, directed and inspired by bodhicitta. Although neither the term nor the idea of bodhicitta are found in early Buddhist texts, some of the seeds of and impulses behind the concept can be traced in these sources. In order to accommodate non-German speakers, the course will be conducted in English.
Assessment and permitted materials
Evaluation will be based on regular attendance, preparation of assigned readings, and active participation in class discussions.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The course aims to explore the influences and developments that gave rise to the notion of bodhicitta, and to examine the full-fledged idea as it is presented in its various aspects in Indian and Tibetan primary sources.
Examination topics
