Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Few terms have been used in recent years by politicians, the public and science as inflationary as the concept of "globalization". Hardly a day goes by without that political and economic decision-makers name "global competition" as a challenge of our time and legitimze national interests. The public discussion makes clear: With the integration of economic, political, social and cultural processes the concept of "space" is far from being obsolete. The opposite is the case: Supranational business clubs (EU, NAFTA) also experience a boom as the sub-national regionalism. The facilitated mobility of goods, money, information and people is countered by the foreclosure of boundaries as shown in modern border regime against unwanted migrants.
Assessment and permitted materials
point system based on active participation, compulsory reading, oral presentation and seminar papers
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
The aim of the seminar lies at identifying and discussing the connections and contradictions between global (and European) socialization processes and the continued importance of the nation state. From a globalization perspective, students are introduced into classics of sociology. A special focus is on the effects of globalization on "developing countries" in the local area.
