Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
The seminar will focus on various security-related topics relevant to the wider MENA region. The topics will cover a broad spectrum of contemporary issues, ranging from regional conflicts, including proxy wars, religious/ethnic tensions and jihadism/terrorism, over the analysis of authoritarian actors to the influence of resource-shortages, climate change and new media. These aspects will be combined with country-specific case studies of Yemen, Syria, Iraq and Somalia amongst others.Students will be required to prepare individual presentations in accordance with the provided weekly readings, and discuss their findings and opinions. During the first session, students are welcome to propose relevant individual topics for their presentations.
Assessment and permitted materials
Active participation in the seminar based on the provided readings, the presentation and the term paper.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
English language skills are required. Arabic language skills are an asset.
Examination topics
Grades are based on the term paper, presentation and participation during the seminar.
