Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Course Description: This course aims to develop skills in reading and translating Indian commentaries on the Prama?avarttika of Dharmakirti (6th-7th? cent.), a Buddhist philosopher who deeply influenced the debate on the means of valid cognition in premodern South Asia. The main text will be Devendrabuddhi’s Pañjika, which was originally composed in Sanskrit and is extant only in an 11th century Tibetan translation (Tshad ma rnam ’grel gyi dka’ ’grel). We will read passages from the second chapter, more specifically from the sections in which the Truth of the cessation of suffering and the Truth of the path are discussed. We will compare Devendrabuddhi’s text with other Indian commentaries in their Tibetan translations, in order to observe patterns of composition, lexical choices and interpretive differences.
