Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this course students will read selected passages from the Mi-dbang rtogs-brjod, the biography of Mi-dbang Pho-lha Bsod-nams stob-rgyas by Mdo-mkhar zhabs-drung Tshe-ring dbang-rgyal. The subject of the biography was the central political figure in Tibet for much of the first half of the eighteenth century and the author was one of Tibet’s great literati. As such the biography is significant for its factual content and for its place as an important literary monument. In reading selected passages attention will be paid to style and comprehension and to the methods necessary for treating the text as an historical record: i.e., verification of people, places and events recorded in it.
