Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this seminar, we will examine the assistance, protection, and integration of asylum seekers in the EU. Using various European countries, such as Austria, Germany, Hungary, and the UK as case studies, we will then analyze how the EU has failed in harmonizing national policies. Furthermore, we will discuss the concept of 'global citizenship' in the light of the politicization and securitization of the asylum policies in Europe.
The participants of this seminar will be able to discuss the following questions: (a) Can we talk about a common European asylum system? (b) What are the implications of the politicization and securitization of asylum policies for the concept and future of the EU? (c) How does the politicization and securitization of asylum create fertile ground for and intensified the intolerance, stereotypes (cognitive bias), prejudice (emotional bias), and discrimination (behavioral bias) along the socially constructed categories? (d) What does the politicization and securitization of asylum mean for the notion of global citizenship?
