Information
Aims, contents and method of the course
Military regimes and one-party states were for a long time the dominant political systems in post-independent Africa. The course examines the depiction of the one-party state and military regimes in sub-Saharan Africa African narratives against the backdrop of generalized dystopia and unfulfilled national aspirations.
Assessment and permitted materials
Writing of a cohesive paper at the end of the course.
Minimum requirements and assessment criteria
Students will:
i. analyze fictional representations of repressive regimes in selected African texts
ii. engage with the concepts of history and representation
