Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

A recurrent feature of contemporary African women’s writing, the depiction of mother-daughter relationships invests African women’s knowledge, voices, and experiences with additional value and visibility. While mother-daughter relations constitute sites of bonding and devotion, they are also fraught with frustration and conflicts. This course sets out to explore the tension between the idealization and abjection of mother as well as the different shades of affection and aversion between mothers and daughters depicted in selected sub-Saharan europhone African fiction crafted by women. Chosen narratives are by both established and new authors. Eclectically driven by postcolonial theory, feminism, and psychoanalysis, this investigation will also lean on disciplines such as history, mythology, religion, and anthropology.
