Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The Course objective is to provide a synopsis of the theories of economic growth and development, with a view to understand the problems of less developed countries and to assess current approaches for the alleviation of these problems. The central focus would be on the road to development and the implications of lending conditionalities imposed on borrowing countries by major international development institutions, including the World Bank and the IMF.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

The Course aim is to develop students' research abilities by the examination of a number of current theoretical and applied topics drawn from existing literature and research works on development economics. The course has a strong applied focus and is divided into three main topics:
Theories of Economic Growth and Development
Poverty and Sustainable Development
Conditionality and Economic Development

Examination topics

Prior training in development economics is a pre-requisite.
Small groups would be formed for discussions, so as to emphasize on relavant themes. A final written paper will be prepared by the students
Regular attendance and participation level is required.
Written work: 60%. Course Participation: 20%. Written Test: 20%.
A written work on development economics and conditionality would be required. It would be individual, or in teams under the expectation that each participant would have made valuable contribution to the team work's paper. The paper would be between 10 - 15 pages. (1.5 space and 12 size)
