Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

In this lecture, important collections in archives, libraries and other institutions will be introduced - what kind of sources they house, what potential they offer for Ottomanist research and how to research them properly.
In addition to discussing the regularly distributed readings, exemplary source types from different periods of Ottoman history (documents, letters, but also narrative sources and possibly Ottoman newspapers) will be read, interpreted and contextualized together.
A visit to the manuscript collection of the Austrian National Library will be scheduled towards the end of the semester.

Assessment and permitted materials

Active participation in the discussion is required, the texts to be prepared will be controlled; written preparation of two short primary texts (transcription, translation, contextualization) during the semester.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Required: Ottoman I and II. Good knowledge of German, English and Turkish required.
The minimum requirement for a positive evaluation is active participation (reading and discussion of the distributed secondary literature, preparation of the primary texts) and regular attendance (a maximum of three missed units will be tolerated); being late frequently as well as not preparing will be counted as absence.
The final mark will be composed of
