Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

At the end of the classes, students should be able to understand and write information concerning Arabic media.
In particular, they should be able to comprehend journalistic news that make use of technical terminology, in both oral and written production. The classes will provide the tools to individuate lexical and morpho-syntactical features in the Arabic news, to answer questions, and to summarise information both written and orally. Most classes will deal with the analysis of current news taken from al-Jazeera, BBC Arabic, al-Arabi al-Jadid, etc.

Assessment and permitted materials

There will be oral presentations (based on the previous lesson) on a topic chosen by the students. There can be made in groups.
The knowledge of the text typology, the use of the specific lexicon, as well as the use of collocations and connectors (explained during the classes) will be taken into account.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Being able to recognise and understand the main theme of the news and most of the technical lexicon.

Examination topics

Slides and book chapters will be presented and distributed during classes.

Reading list

The material will be given during the classes. Those who do not attend the classes will be given other indications.
