Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Our textbook for this class is Carl Brockelmann's "Syrische Grammatik". PDFs of the relevant parts of this book will be available to students on Moodle. This will be supplemented by power-points and homework assignments. The end goal of this semester's course is that students achieve a basic understanding of Syriac grammar and vocabulary, with an ability to read short excerpts from authentic Syriac texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

50% of students' final grade for the course is based on performance on the final exam. The remaining 50% is based on homework (25%) and class participation (25%).

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

Here is the grading system that will be used when evaluating students' performance:
1 (91-100%) very good
2 (78-90%) good
3 (66-77%) sufficient
4 (53-65%) passable
5 (0-52%) not enought to pass the course

Examination topics

The final exam will take place on Tuesday, 24 January 2023, 16:45-18:15. This exam will consist of an excerpt from a text in Syriac which students will be required to translate. Translations may be in either English or German. Students may use any grammars, dictionaries, class notes, and/or power-points from the course.

Reading list

Regarding our textbook, see above under "Ziele, Inhalte und Methode der Lehveranstaltung". Excerpts of Syriac texts will be available on Moodle. If needed, secondary literature, e.g. articles on Syriac philology, literrature, and culture will be uploaded by the instructor to Moodle.
