Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

This course aims to develop students’ academic writing skills in Turkish. Throughout the semester we discuss and practice various academic and professional forms of communication (such as abstracts, cover letters, CVs, official communications, book reports, and essays). Course participants will be supported in enhancing their academic writing skills by learning to express their opinions clearly in written form and familiarize themselves with correct precise vocabulary and correct grammar. They will also be provided with advice on how to contextualize sources into Turkish, how to summarize, paraphrase and quote accurately, and on how to formulate research questions.
The assignments and in-class activities will consist of reading academic texts, writing about and discussing them.

Assessment and permitted materials

Students are expected to attend classes regularly (maximum 3 times absence is excused) and actively participate in in-class activities and discussions. Students will be required to hand in short assignments regularly to increase fluency in writing. There will also be two written exams (one test, one short essay). Dictionaries may be used during class.
Attendance and in-class participation 30%
Weekly short assignments 40 %
Written Exams 30 %
