Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

The past and present of Muslim diversity in Central and Western Europe will be discussed in 13 lecture units. The following questions are at the center of the lecture series: Which historical events explain the mutual images of Muslims and the majority society? What is the logic of past, present and future migration movements of Muslim groups? How did Muslim groups organize and organize themselves in Central- and Western Europe? What influence do different interpretations of the holy scriptures have on the participation and integration of Muslim groups? How do different Muslim groups react to their integration into a Western society, with particular attention being paid to different nationalities and different Islamic directions? How realistic is the idea of a European-style Islam? How are Muslim groups subjected to change given phenomena such as popular culture, the situation of women, and the contrast between individualism and collectivism? What motivates people to adopt the ideology of radical groups and what are Muslim initiatives doing about it? Furthermore, how can people who adopted such ideologies be re-socialized? What changes in majority society and Muslim societies are desirable in order to feel a reduction in tension between these segments of our societies.
