Information

Aims, contents and method of the course

Building on the course Introduction to Hittite I, this course introduces the students to their first extended readings in Hittite. Students will read assigned passages from the Annals of Muršili II in both transliteration and cuneiform handcopy. Emphasis will be placed on mastering the grammar presented in the first course. Goals of this course include gaining greater proficiency in Hittite through reading authentic texts in the original language. Texts will cover a wide range of topics and genres, dating from different periods, e.g. hagiographies, chronicles, and poetry, along with (potentially) magical and scientific texts.

Assessment and permitted materials

For the exam, students will have to demonstrate the ability to translate an excerpt from a Hittite text on their own. The exam is open-book, meaning that students may use class notes, grammars, dictionaries, and power-points from the class.

Minimum requirements and assessment criteria

1 (grades 100-91) very good
2 (grades 90-78) good
3 (grades 77-66) satisfactory
4 (grades 65-53) just enough
5 (grades 52-0) not enough*

*Students who earn a 5 will fail the exam.

Examination topics

The exam will consist, as noted above, of translating an excerpt from a Hittite text.
