Aims, contents and method of the course

Strangers, Friends and Enemies: Ottomans in Vienna and Habsburgs in Istanbul until the 19th Century

The seminar explores the history of encounters between the Ottomans and the Habsburgs, focusing on written testimonies of individuals who traveled between Istanbul and Vienna until the end of the 19th century. These include letters, travelogues, reports, and memoirs.

The seminar employs a hybrid methodology: (i) reading and discussing primary sources and secondary literature forms the conventional approach; (ii) studying travel routes and network relations in the relevant sources using tools such as Gephi and Palladio represents the digital humanities approach.

Strangers, Friends, and Enemies employs this hybrid methodology to explore Ottoman and Habsburg relations and their perceptions of one another through in-depth readings, discussions, and data visualization.

In the course of the seminar, the students are to deal with a specific aspect of the topic, give a presentation on it and write a bachelor's thesis on it at the end.

Assessment and permitted materials

The weekly readings include samples of original source material, scholarly essays on the topic of the week, monographs, and edited volumes. Depending on how the readings are distributed each week, one or more students will get the monographs as presentations.

The tools to be used in the course (Gephi and Palladio) will be introduced during the initial lectures, followed by examples demonstrating how to apply these tools to the relevant sources. Therefore, students are kindly requested to access/download the following two free programs before attending class:

Palladio: https://hdlab.stanford.edu/palladio/
Gephi: https://gephi.org/
